BlackJack Strategy

First off, there is a chart called Basic Strategy, which is a computerized breakdown of which moves are best in each situation. These charts are based on results of millions of simulated hands and suggest the best move you should make in every situation. The explanation of this information is obvious. It is BASIC, meaning that it offers logical moves and it is STRATEGY: intelligent decisions you should make. Hence the term BASIC STRATEGY.

Because we're talking about rules used in online casinos, you should remember that these are contrary to Vegas and A.C. The dealer shows only his up card and receives his face down card only after the players complete their decisions. It really doesn't affect the game at all.

Basically, it is no different than the 'normal' casinos you're used to because, in actuality, you can't see the dealers down card in those other instances anyway.

So, to start with, you are dealt two cards and the dealer is dealt one up card, which allows you to make your basic strategy decisions, based on your two cards vs. his up card.

For example, if you are dealt a Jack/Five and the dealer has a Queen showing. You're in trouble but, instead of guessing what the right move would be, you should refer to your BASIC STRATEGY, which has already figured out the best move for this situation. That move would be: HIT your Jack/Five (15) vs. the dealers Queen.

Why would you hit that 15? Good question. Here is the logical answer: If you did not hit it (stayed with your 15), the dealer, after receiving his down card, would turn it over, to be matched with his Queen. That down card could be any one of 13 cards, from Ace through King.

Taking them in order, if the dealer turns over 7-8-9-10-Jack-Queen-King or Ace, you're beat. He would have 17 or better. That took care of 8 of those cards. If he turned over 2-3-4-5-6, he would have a breaking hand and could take another card, until he reaches a minimum of 17. One out of five times he will draw to a 17 to 21.

That means if you stand with that 15, you would lose 8 out of 13 times by average, not a pretty picture. So, BASIC STRATEGY gives you the proper move to make. Will you then win every time? Of course not, but you have cut your chances of losing way down.

So, before you intend to take a shot at the Blackjack tables, I want you to get your hands on a BASIC STRATEGY CHART and memorize it. You can download one here for free! That won't guarantee that you'll win every hand, but will put you in the right direction of knowing WHAT to do (hit, stand, split or double) on any combination of cards dealt.

Let's wrap up this initial basic look at Blackjack. First thing you do is learn Basic Strategy until you are perfect at it. Then, when you sit at a table, you will buy in for chips, by putting up cash. This cash will be converted into chips that you will use to make your bets. We'll assume you are at a $5 minimum table. You would then bet an amount of chips you want to wager on that first game. The dealer gives you two cards and himself an up card. You are now ready to play Blackjack
